Kung fu fighting game: clear the dojo in your browser

Real hitboxes, real combos. Best of three, no mercy.

A full 2-player fighting game starring four original fighters: Ember, Cyclone, Verdant, and Nova, each with their own duotone color style. Built on the animation timing and per-frame hit/hurt boxes of Kung Fu Man, the sample character bundled with the open-source Ikemen-GO engine (2009 Elecbyte, Creative Commons Non-Commercial), driving an original game engine: motion-input special moves, throws, blocking, knockdowns, and a meter-fed hyper system. Play solo against the CPU or head-to-head on one keyboard.

How to play Kung Fu Arena

A best-of-three fighting game for one or two players at the same keyboard. Player one moves on WASD, punches with F and G and kicks with V and B; player two moves on the arrow keys, punches with comma and full stop and kicks with M and slash. Holding back blocks, for either player. Light attacks are fast and safe; strong attacks hurt and leave you exposed if they miss. Special moves are motion inputs - a quarter-circle on the movement keys followed by an attack - and throws beat blocking, which is what stops a turtling opponent from simply never moving. The hit and hurt boxes are per-frame, so whether something connects is decided by the animation rather than by distance, and spacing is a real skill.

Tips

  • Block by holding away from your opponent. There is no dedicated block button, which means you cannot block and advance at the same time.
  • Throws beat blocks. If someone is sitting behind a guard and refusing to move, walk in and throw them.
  • Light attacks first. They recover fast enough to be safe on block, which strong attacks are not.
  • Learn one special move properly rather than four badly. The motion inputs are strict, and a move you can do on demand beats three you can do sometimes.
  • Watch the feet, not the hands. Whether someone is advancing tells you more about what is coming than the attack animation does.

About Kung Fu Arena

Kung Fu Arena is an original fighting engine built on borrowed timing. The animation frame data and the per-frame hit and hurt boxes come from Kung Fu Man, the sample character bundled with the open-source Ikemen-GO engine, which is a well-understood reference point for what a fighting game's numbers should feel like; everything above that - the motion-input parser, the throw system, the round structure, the AI - is written for this game. The four fighters are original, each with a duotone colour identity so that at a glance you always know which side of the screen is yours, which matters more than it sounds when two characters share a skeleton. It is one of the two games on this site drawn in 2D canvas rather than WebGL.

Questions

How do I block in Kung Fu Arena?
Hold the direction away from your opponent. There is no separate block button, so blocking and advancing are mutually exclusive.
How do special moves work?
They are motion inputs: a directional sequence on your movement keys followed immediately by an attack button. The timing is strict, so they take practice.
Can two people play on one keyboard?
Yes. Player one uses WASD with F, G, V and B; player two uses the arrow keys with comma, full stop, M and slash.
Can I play Kung Fu Arena on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Kung Fu Arena draws to a plain 2D canvas, so it runs on just about anything with a browser. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, and it is built wide - turning the phone sideways gives it the shape it was designed for. A keyboard works too.
